Description
A magnificent flowering tree that deserves a spot in every garden where it will grow, the Eastern Redbud is an elegant North American native tree known as the “harbinger of spring,” and is one of our personal favorites. In late winter or early spring, the branches become literally smothered in pea-like bright purple flowers creating a dramatic color display in the landscape. But this tree’s beauty doesn’t end with the spring flower show. Immediately after flowering its beautiful, heart-shaped bright green leaves emerge to warm your own heart. The leaves mature to an olive green and then finally to golden-yellow in fall before dropping to show off the very handsome, spreading and often flat-topped crown of unique and irregular grey branches. Grows well in sun or shade!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing upright with an irregular rounded form 20 to 30 feet tall and wide, the Eastern Redbud is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in sunny or shady landscape or woodland borders. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and to provide beauty and some shade around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to purple theme gardens, native gardens, woodland gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 30 feet or more for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Eastern Redbud tree is very easy to grow in most any average, moist but well-drained soil and full sun or shade. It is very drought tolerant when established. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils can be problematic.

Okay, here goes. This company is amazing! I ordered a 5 gallon Redbud last September, when it arrived it did not look good. It may have had 8 or so leaves, and they were all discolored with black spots all over, not pretty. Now I want to defend Wilson Brothers. In Massachusetts last year, especially on the Cape, we had an extreme drought, and temperatures in September were extremely warm. The freight company emailed me and said my delivery was delayed. I tracked it. This poor tree sat in a warehouse for days in extreme heat, no light, or water.. there were dropped leaves in the box. This plant was so stressed. I of course contacted Wilson Brothers. They were wicked awesome! They were so apologetic, even though it wasn’t their issue. They told me to keep the tree and gave full credit to use for other plants. These folks are legitimate. By the way I have purchased from them before this transaction and have always been pleased with their plants. Please feel free to purchase from these guys.———————————————————–Wow!
