Description
A very attractive oldie-but-goodie evergreen that has become more rare in cultivation, the Green Thread Cypress is exceptionally easy to grow and interesting with its shaggy habit and soft, narrow, thread-like foliage. It grows in a loose pyramid to around 15 feet tall and maybe half as wide, though an annual shearing or pruning in late winter can keep it smaller, 8 feet wide in 15-20 years, although it can be kept smaller by annual shearing or pruning. You might be happy to know that it is both heat and drought tolerant and deer have turned their nose up to the one we’ve had growing in our gardens since the mid 1990s.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 to 15 feet in height and 7 to 8 feet wide at the base, the Green Thread Cypress is ideal for use as a focal point specimen, to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures, in groupings, or arranged in single or staggered rows to form a very attractive privacy screen or buffer. Also suitable for growing in large containers and a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 6 feet apart for privacy screens; 12 or more feet apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
The Green Thread Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to part sun. It is drought tolerant when established and exceptionally low maintenance, requiring little if any pruning to keep its pyramidal form.
